Creating Connections

A Peer Support Program

The Consumer-to-Consumer Outreach Program operated through the Mental Health Association in Tulsa has found that peer social support means success for many consumers in the Tulsa area.

The Program has been operating since January 2000 and has proven to be significantly effective in improving self-esteem and social confidence for consumers of mental health services. The program focuses on social support, recreation, and building friendships by reaching out to consumers who may otherwise isolate or fear social interaction. The peer-operated approach provides an empowerment-focused recovery for the consumers working in the program and it also assists the consumers who are served by being non-threatening, allowing them to share power in relationships, and offering understanding and compassion by consumer workers who have "been there".
