Most young people are excited about their 18th birthday. This is a celebration into the beginning of their adulthood from beginning their college education to starting a career. But for young people with mental health challenges or who are in state custody, such as the juvenile justice or DHS, this pivotal age into adulthood can be both frightening and filled with anxiety. The prospect of ending up jobless and/or homeless is a very real threat.
As young adults turn 18, legally they become adults. Our community offers services which are determined by your age (children services and adult services). Research shows that developmentally we become adults at the age of 27. So why can’t our services reflect the research?
On average 200 youth turn 18 while in DHS custody (in Tulsa County) 1 out 3 will experience homelessness 50% will be jobless And 95% of the employed will have earned income below the poverty line.
Who are our transitional youth?
Transitional youth are young adults ages 16-25, this is the age when we transition from adolescents too adulthood, from children services to adult services, and from depending on a person or system to independence.
