Support groups are places where you can go to share your
problems, hopes and fears. They are places you can go to
become better informed about the illness you are fighting
and find yourself empowered with the knowledge to conquer
it.
Support groups are places like no other, where people really
understand what you are talking about as you share your experiences
of living with mental illness. They are places to rest, to
feel safe, to grow, to laugh, to cry, and, most importantly,
to heal.
All support group meetings are free of charge and facilitated
by a mental health professional. Meetings are held at the
main offices of the Mental Health Association in Tulsa. You'll
find us conveniently located just north of the intersection
of 21st and Boulder, across the street from Veterans' Park.

and problems, as well as any other unresolved issues that
might be causing problems. In an open discussion with their

their own anger.

Anxiety Disorders
Anxiety Disorders are the most common
form of mental illness and affect more than 40 million Americans.
Symptoms may include: overwhelming feelings of panic and fear,
uncontrollable obsessive thoughts, painful intrusive memories,
recurring nightmares, physical symptoms such as feeling sick
to your stomach, “butterflies” in your stomach,
heart pounding, startling easily, and muscle tension. Anxiety
disorders differ from normal feelings of nervousness. Untreated
disorders can push people into avoiding situations that trigger
or worsen their symptoms like work, close relationships, and
social activities. This group offers a safe place for individuals
to discuss the sometimes overwhelming thoughts and fears that
are a part of anxiety disorders, along with an opportunity
to share and develop coping skills.
Meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each
month at 6:30 p.m.
Bipolar Group
People living with bipolar disorder,
or manic depression as it is sometimes called, struggle with
personal relationships and family and workplace issues. The
illness can be extremely distressing and disruptive, and causes
a person’s moods to swing from excessively “high”
and/or irritable to sad and hopeless, with periods of a normal
mood in between. This group provides mutual support and assists
with coping skills for people struggling with this disorder.
Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month
at 6:30 p.m.
Depression Group*
Depression is an illness that affects the whole body, causing
persistent changes in a person’s mood, behavior, and
feelings. It is one of the leading causes of disability in
the U.S. today, and in addition to causing emotional distress,
can lead to physical pain. This group gives those battling
depression a place to talk through their struggles and opportunities
to learn from others engaged in the recovery process.
Meetings are held on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of
each month at 6:00 p.m.
*Supported by an educational grant from Eli Lilly
and Company.
