The Wrath of Math
This presentation will focus on the special cognitive challenges
presented by mathematical learning during childhood and the
specific neurodevelopmental breakdowns that occur among students.
While the evening is geared to medical professionals, with
an emphasis on pediatricians, psychiatrists, and family practice
physicians, others are welcome to attend, including mental
health professionals, educators, school administrators, and
parents. Attendees will come away with a better understanding
of the brain processes involved in understanding and remembering
math, ways to manage mathematical deficits, and knowledge
of the common emotional and motivational complications of
mathematical underachievement.
Mel Levine, M.D.
Dr. Mel Levine is a Professor of Pediatrics at the University
of North Carolina Medical School in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Dr. Levine is also the co-founder of All
Kinds of Minds (www.allkindsofkinds.org), a nonprofit
Institute for the study of differences in learning, and co-chairs
the Institute's Board of Trustees with Charles R. Schwab.
Over the past thirty years Dr. Levine has pioneered programs
for the evaluation of children and young adults with learning,
development, and/or behavioral challenges. In 1995, Dr. Levine
received the C. Anderson Aldrich Award from the American Academy
of Pediatrics for outstanding contribution to the field of
child development. Dr. Levine graduated summa cum laude from
Brown University and was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford in England.
He later graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed
his pediatric training at The Children's Hospital in Boston.
Dr. Levine served for fourteen years as Chief of the Division
of Ambulatory Pediatrics at The Children's Hospital and was
an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The Harvard Medical
School before moving to North Carolina. Dr. Levine's groundbreaking
framework for understanding why children struggle in school
provides a straightforward, practical system for recognizing
variations in the way children learn and uses their strengths
to become more successful students. Properly executed, this
model can change lives by radically improving prospects for
success in and out of school. Dr. Levine is the author of
numerous publications, including the best seller, A Mind
at a Time.
